Vinetta Strombergs launched her directing career with an acclaimed all-female production of CAESAR at TWP in 1986. The show reached national attention with its non-traditional casting, powerful flamenco battle scenes and a futuristic design. Her eclectic career has included brilliant one-man shows (premiere of Wild Abandon with Daniel MacIvor and Smoke with Hume Baugh), large cast musicals (Rodgers & Hart: A Celebration, Lysistrata, Godspell, A Chorus Line), edgy dramas, frothy comedies, and of course, Shakespeare [A Midsummers Nights Dream; Measure for Measure or Tit for Tat; Pericles; Two Gentlemen of Verona]. She has taught and directed in many theatre training programs and enjoys having a connection to emerging professional talent. Thanks to Larry Lewis and Tomson Highway, she began her association with the development of First Nations playwrights and actors and has directed several premieres of the work of Drew Hayde n Taylor and Kenneth T. Williams in regional theatres. Her production of Sixty Below for Native Earth Performing Arts garnered 7 Dora Nominations, including outstanding direction. In 2013, The Musical of Musicals: The Musical! was the big Toronto Fringe hit that got rave reviews and was picked up for presentation by Mirvish Productions as part of their 50th Anniversary Season. Plans are always afoot to develop another project in collaboration with other theatre artists of all sorts. The dream is to create a really successful big Canadian musical. No matter what, she just wants to make theatre happen, attract audiences and, to riff on the definition of acting - make it as good as possible within the given circumstances.
