Rios, Michelle

Biography: 

Michelle Rios has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe in countless theatrical and concert venues. Some of her many credits include featured roles in Broadway productions of Paul Simon's The Capeman and the Tony Award nominated revivals of The Sound of Music and Man of La Mancha. She also appeared as “Abuela Claudia” in the Tony Award Winning Best Musical In the Heights, and as “Maria Elena” in Elizabeth Swados' opera Missionaries at La MaMa, ETC. and BAM. A Metropolitan Opera Mid Atlantic Semi-finalist, she enjoys collaborating with artists and composers on new works. She was a guest artist in both Spoleto Music Festivals in Italy and Charleston, NC, where she performed the world premiere of Magic & Transformation, a chamber orchestral piece with lyrics by Lou Reed and music by Peter Gordon. Other guest artist appearances include: The Washington Opera, The National Symphony, The Greenville Symphony, The Arlingt on Symphony, The Pan American Symphony Orchestra, The Core Ensemble, Opera Maxlrain (Germany), The "In" Series, etc. She has performed and collaborated with such luminaries as Paul Simon, Marc Anthony, Ruben Blades, Placido Domingo, Lila Downs, Richard Chamberlain, and Oscar nominees Ed Harris, Mare Winningham, and Mary Elizabeth Mastroantonio, to name a few. She had the pleasure of collaborating with Tony award winning composer Adam Guettel, on a newly revised chamber production of The Light in the Piazza, performing the role of “Signora Nacarelli” and originated the role of “Lupe” in the World Premiere of Michael John LaChiusa’s Giant directed by Jonathan Butterell. She performed alongside Grammy Award winning recording and concert artist Lila Downs as “Mama Elena” in the Sundance Theatre Lab workshop presentation of Like Water for Chocolate with music and lyrics by Lila Downs and a book by Tony Award nominee Quiara Al egria Hudes. Currently, Ms. Rios appears in the supporting role of “Flora” alongside Oscar nominee Ed Harris in the feature film Frontera (2014).
