Mieko Ouchi works as an actor, writer and director in theatre, film and TV and is based out of Edmonton. Her first full-length play, The Red Priest (Eight Ways To Say Goodbye)has been produced at Alberta Theatre Projects twice, Workshop West Theatre, the Globe Theatre, the Tarragon, the Thousand Islands Playhouse and Isis Productions in Idyllwild, California. In 2004 the play was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Drama, winning the Carol Bolt Award in 2005. It has been translated into Japanese by Toyoshi Yoshihara. Her second play, The Blue Light, has been produced at Alberta Theatre Projects (Betty Mitchell Award - Outstanding New Play), Workshop West Theatre, Firehall Theatre Centre in Vancouver, Keyano Theatre in Fort McMurray and at DMV Productions in Halifax. It has been translated into French, Japanese, Russian and Czech and was read in 2006 in Moscow at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival, and was nominated for both The City of Edmonton Book Prize and the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama from the Writers Guild of Alberta in 2007. The Dada Play was a commission from Red Deer College Theatre Department and has enjoyed additional productions at St. Mary's University College in Calgary and the School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma where she was the inaugural Faith Broome Playwright in Residence in 2009. The Midnapore Cycle, a site specific play premiered at St. Mary's University College in 2009.  Nisei Blue premiered at ATP's Enbridge playRites Festival in 2011. Nisei Blue was a finalist for the 2011 Carol Bolt Award and won the 2011 Betty Award for Outstanding New Play. I Am For You, a new TYA script for teen audiences premiered at Concrete Theatre in Edmonton in 2013 and will be published in 2015 by Playwrights Canada Press. Mieko received the Enbridge Award for Established Canadian Playwright at ATP's 2012 playRites Festival to complete the first draft of the script, which also received support from the Banff Playwrights Colony, where she was Senior Playwright in Residence, and the NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick where she was Festival Dramaturg, both in 2013. She is working on a new adult playMakepeace for the Citadel Theatre's Playwrights' Forum with residency support from both the Banff Playwrights Colony and the Stratford Festival. She is also starting work on a new teen play on sexual consent. Mieko's award-winning films Shepherd's Pie and Sushi, By This Parting, Samurai Swing and Minor Keys have played over 30 festivals internationally and aired on CBC, Bravo! and the W Network.
