Maureen Hunter was raised with five brothers on a farm near Indian Head, Saskatchewan. She attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, then in 1971 moved to Winnipeg for one year. She has lived there ever since. She has earned her living as a writer most of her adult life, initially in journalism, then with the Canadian Wheat Board. In 1983, she gave up writing for others and began writing for herself. Since then, she has written eight full-length plays and has co-written a one-act children's play. Her most recent play, Wild Mouth, premiered at Tarragon Theatre, Toronto, in January 2008.  Her play Transit of Venus, which premiered at Manitoba Theatre Centre in 1992, received its British premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992 and its U.S. premiere at the Berkshire Theatre, Stockbridge, Mass., in 1998.  Transit of Venus was produced as a full-length opera in November 2007 by Manitoba Opera, with a libretto by Maureen and music by Victor Davies.  Maureen's plays have been produced extensively in Canada, on stages large and small, as well as in Britain and the U.S. and by CBC and BBC Radio. They have been nominated for two Governor General's Awards, two Dora Mavor Moore Awards and the Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre. Her work has been published individually and in a number of anthologies.  Her plays include Atlantis, Beautiful Lake WInnipeg, Footprints on the Moon, Poor Uncle Ernie in his Covered Cage, The Queen of Queen Street, Transit of Venus, Vinci and Wild Mouth.  Most of her plays premiered at Manitoba Theatre Centre, which will also premiere her next play, Sarah Ballenden. Maureen is represented by Core Literary Inc.; contact charlesnorthcote@rogers.com or maureenhunter@shaw.ca
