Biography: 

Kate Newby is an independent theatre director, actor and festival curator. With over 150 credits in theatre and film, Kate has worked for Theatre Calgary, Alberta Theatre Projects, Ground Zero, Sage, Blacklist, Theatre Junction, One Yellow Rabbit, Lunchbox, Vertigo Theatre, The Globe Theatre, The Citadel, Northern Light Theatre, Workshop West Theatre, Phoenix Theatre, Theatre Northwest, Theatre Network, Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Great Canadian Theatre Company.

Selected directing credits include Twelfth Night for The Shakespeare Company; The Apology, True Love Lies, How do I Love Thee? and The Goat or Who is Sylvia? for Alberta Theatre Projects; In the Heat of the Night, Twelve Angry Men for Vertigo Theatre; Lion in the Streets and Bent for Sage Theatre; Otherwise Bob for the Globe Theatre and CRAVE for Blacklist Theatre Project.

Selected acting credits include You Will remember Me; August, An Afternoon in the Country; Angels in America Parts I and II; Counsellor at Law; A Streetcar Named Desire; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Private Lives. Kate has received numerous nominations and awards for both acting and directing.

As a festival curator, Kate was the Artistic Director of the Calgary International Children’s Festival (2004 – 2011); in 2012 she curated the Calgary Cultural Capitol of Canada’s Opening Celebrations and in 2014 she programmed the Arts and Cultural Festival for the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
