Webber, Jennifer Wynne

Biography:

Jennifer Wynne Webber is a playwright, novelist, and screenwriter who lives on Vancouver Island. She is currently at work developing new plays as well as projects for film and television.

Her first play, BESIDE MYSELF, about a young female physicist looking for answers aboard a small sailboat, has been praised for being "smart, funny and touching," "impassioned and intelligent," and for demonstrating "courage and originality." It was published by Scirocco Drama in 2001 after productions at Saskatchewan's Dancing Sky Theatre and as an Actor's Equity Co-op with the support of 25th Street Theatre. In 2014, her drama WHITE LIES was published by the online literary journal Ryga: A Journal of Provocations. In 2010, under its previous title, Whistling at the Northern Lights, the play was presented in New York as a staged reading at the Obie-award-winning Off-Broadway theatre, Urban Stages. Urban Stages Artistic Director Frances Hill subsequently nominated the play for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. In 2007, an earlier version of that play was chosen for Germany's Neue Theaterstücke aus Kanada Competition -- a selection of the top five new plays from Canada and one of only three English language plays chosen that year --by an international jury who called the play a "sophisticated psychological thriller." Other early drafts of the play had also been short-listed for both Nightwood Theatre's 2005 Groundswell Festival of New Work by Women in Toronto and the 2005 Canadian national On the Verge festival, and selected for the Saskatchewan Playwrights' Centre 2006 Spring Festival of New Plays. Her comedy PEACHES AND CREAM is a warm-hearted and funny exploration of fateful choices, love, friendship and the rising tide of 1960s feminism. In 2015, it was workshopped and presented as a staged reading by Theatre One in Nanaimo while a very early draft of the play was also presented at the Saskatchewan Playwrights' Centre's 2005 Spring Festival of New Plays. Her novel, DEFYING GRAVITY, was published by Coteau Books in 2000. It received positive reviews across Canada and was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards, including Book of the Year.
