Juvonen, Helen

Biography: 

Helen is the founder and Artistic Director of Thought For Food Productions as well as an independent actor, director, producer and playwright. Producing anything from Shakespeare to new Canadian plays, she is interested in theatre that explores the shared space between the performers and the audience.

With Thought For Food she has produced, directed and/or appeared in over a dozen shows including her own play THE ALEATORY PROJECT, where the actors use random elements to determine the course of the play live on stage. For the company she has directed AGNES OF GOD, THE BIRTHDAY PARTY, LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST, and THE UNIVERSAL WOLF. She has also produced and performed in several other Thought For Food productions, including the new works THE COUSINS OF CORSICA and "a little faux pas". Most recently for the company, Helen produced and performed in the Canadian Premiere of THE MEMO by Vaclav Havel, in a new translation by Paul Wilson.

As an actor, Helen's credits include: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Spadina House Museum/Single Thread Theatre Company); PURGATORY IN INGLETON (SummerWorks); BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Sudbury Theatre Centre); THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST (Casa Loma); TWELFTH NIGHT (Urban Bard) VOLPONE (Ontario Renaissance Festival); MACBETH (Shakespeare in the Square) and SPRING AWAKENING (Ranevsky Repertory Theatre). Helen was also the last actress to play Mollie in the long-running Toronto Truck Theatre production of THE MOUSETRAP.

Other credits include co-creating and performing in the puppet play HANDLE WITH CARE (Toronto FringeKids!); directing REARVIEW (Toronto & Calgary Fringe Festivals); and Assistant Director for YARN (SummerWorks) and THE MISANTHROPE (Guild Festival Theatre). She has also written the puppet play JURKKA JARVINEN’S TROLL STORIES, parts of which have been presented at The Puppetmongers’ “Fresh Ideas in Puppetry” and Theatre Passe Muraille’s “Crapshoot.”

Helen recently fulfilled a lifelong dream when she became a Jeopardy! Champion.
