Biography: 

Kate Newby is the Artistic Producer of Handsome Alice Theatre and a Calgary-based director, actor, and festival curator whose work in new play development and the staging of contemporary plays has appeared on numerous stages across western Canada.

With over 150 acting credits, some highlights include: You Will Remember Me, August, an Afternoon in the Country, Angels in America (I and II), Love and Human Remains (Alberta Theatre Projects); Private Lives, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, A Streetcar Named Desire, Counsellor at Law (Theatre Calgary); and Cyrano de Bergerac (The Citadel Theatre).

Selected Directing Credits include: The Drowning Girls (Theatre Northwest); Hamlet(Theatre Calgary’s Shakespeare by the Bow); She Stoops to Conquer (The Stratford Festival, Assistant Director); Good Night Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), Twelfth Night (The Shakespeare Company); Waiting for the Parade, The Apology, True Love Lies, The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?, How Do I Love Thee? (Alberta Theatre Projects); The Mousetrap, In the Heat of the Night, Twelve Angry Men (Vertigo Theatre); Lion in the Streets (premiere and remount), Bent (Sage Theatre); Crave (Blacklist Theatre).

As a festival curator, Kate was the Artistic Director of the Calgary International Children’s Festival (2004-2011). She has also curated events and festivals for Beakerhead 2015, the Canada Winter Games, CAPACOA, and Calgary 2012.

Kate has received five theatre awards and eighteen nominations for directing, acting and production. She holds a BFA Acting degree from The University of Alberta and an MFA Directing degree from The University of Calgary.
