Lees-Blakey, Dorothy

Biography: 

Writer/composer/lyricist/actress/translator Dorothy Lees-Blakey was born in Bolton, England. An Honours graduate in French of Manchester University and an Associate of the London College of Music, she came to Canada in 1969. Her music and lyrics have been published, professionally recorded and performed on stage, radio and television both here and in the U.K. An accomplished actress, she has had principal roles in many Canadian stage and television drama productions. Dorothy has translated and adapted several French farces and writes script, music and lyrics for her musical shows. Her Pied Piper Symphonic Tale in Poetry and Song, for which she wrote poetic narrative, music and lyrics, had its world premiere performance by the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra on November 2, 1996, and has since been performed by Symphony Orchestras in Kitchener, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Auckland, New Zealand. Her full-length musical version of Heidi premiered at Chemainus Theatre, Vancouver Island, BC in November 2002, followed in May 2003 by her new large-scale Pride and Prejudice musical at the Ridge Playhouse, Victoria, BC. Love in a Minor Key, an original revue based entirely on her songs, opened at Hamilton Place Studio Theatre, Hamilton, ON in February 2004.
