Wagner, Colleen

Biography: 

Colleen Wagner was born in Alberta but currently divides her time between Toronto and a small riverside village in New Brunswick. She studied visual arts at OCA and English and Drama at U of T. She received the Governor General Award in 1996 for The Monument, which has been translated into numerous languages and continues to be performed internationally. Other plays include: The Morning Bird, published 2009, by Scirocco Drama, down from heaven, premiered at Imago Theatre, 2009, and Home, published by Scirocco Drama, premiered at Bus Stop, Halifax, 2010. She has written a number of screenplays, including an adaptation of The Monument. She cofounded and was co_artistic director of The NotaBle Acts Theatre Co. in Fredericton, NB. A SSHRC research/creation grant took her to post-conflict zones in Africa and later to matriarchal societies to create a female-heroic myth from stories of women and girls who have survived trauma in Africa. The Living, a play based on the actual stories of women and girls who survived trauma, a feature documentary entitled Women Building Peace and an interactive website are the culmination of this project.
