Biography: 

Bev Brett lives and works as a playwright, director, and theatre educator in the St. Ann’s Bay area of Cape Breton, She has written comedies, revues, dramas, children’s plays, popular theatre pieces and reenactments about the culture of both modern day and historical Cape Breton for most theatre groups and venues on the Island as well as her own , The St. Ann’s Bay Players. In 2002 she wrote her first full length play “ The Margaret”, based on the migration of  900 Highland Gaels from St. Ann’s to New Zealand in the 1850’s. The play was first developed at Mulgrave Road Theatre and Banff playRites colony and after performing for two seasons at The Gaelic College in St. Ann’s, her company toured the play to New Zealand. “Louisbourg Lives” and “The Spirit of Aspy Bay” were written for for the Fortress of Louisbourg and  The North Highlands Community Museum.“Down North, the play of Cape Breton’s Magazine”,  has seen over 100 performances and is published by Breton Books. In 2010 she adapted Alistair MacLeod’s short story, “Vision” for The Cabot Trail Writer’s Festival. Her recent modern day play, “Out The Meadow” has had three productions in Nova Scotia with Forerunner Theatre, Ship’s Company Theatre, and The St. Ann’s Bay Players. Directed by Mary Vingoe, in 2010, it garnered a Merritt Award nomination. She was on the executive of PARC (Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre) for 15 years, and is currently Member -at- Large at PGC. She also works as a dramaturge at Cape Breton University. She is currently working on “The Healing Stone”, a recovery play, and a series of short Gaelic plays. All of her work has been produced and she has directed over 60 plays. Her latest play ," Out of Black Cove" is premiering in July , 2013, at the Hall of the Clans, the Gaelic College , St. Ann's, Cape Breton. created for the Institution, it is a rollicking journey back and forth in time through the history of St. Ann's Bay. comedy, drama and music.
