Hodges, Ann

Biography: 

Ann Hodges is a Winnipeg-based director who works across Canada in theatre, musicals and opera. Directing credits include theatres of all sizes (A-house to G-house), independent companies, repertory festivals, world premieres, outdoor performances, contemporary and classical opera, and theatre/opera for young audiences.

Ann was the Artistic Associate at Prairie Theatre Exchange during the 2014-15 season, and has served on numerous panels, juries and boards, including the Board of the Winnipeg Arts Council (2012 to present).

Career Highlights include: Grey Gardens (Acting Up Stage, Toronto - 7 Dora nominations including Outstanding Production (Musical Theatre) and Outstanding Direction (Musical Theatre & Opera); August: Osage County, Top Girls, Our Country’s Good, (Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre); Butcher, The December Man, The Rez Sisters (Prairie Theatre Exchange); Mary Poppins, The Little Mermaid (Rainbow Stage); Goodnight Desdemona Good Morning Juliet, The Secret Mask, (Great Canadian Theatre Company - 3 Rideau Nominations including Outstanding Productions); Bashir Lazhar (Theatre Projects Manitoba); Urinetown (Persephone Theatre - 3 SATA Awards including Outstanding Production); Danny King of the Basement, Jabber (Manitoba Theatre for Young People); The Lonely Diner (World Premiere - Blyth Festival); and directing over 1000 performers as Artistic Director of the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 North American Indigenous Games.

Ann has directed for most major opera companies in Canada. Also an acclaimed librettist, her adaptations and original libretti have been produced across Canada and the US., including Vancouver Opera’s acclaimed production of Naomi’s Road which has received numerous productions and toured BC, Alberta, the Canadian War Museum, and parts of the US.

Ann is a frequent guest director or acting instructor at training institutions including: National Theatre School, Opera de Montreal, Contemporary Opera Lab, Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers, Victoria Conservatory of Music, Calgary Opera Ensemble, and various universities.

Ann is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada (Directing, 3-year). Other professional development includes: HB Studio (NY); Shaw Festival Directors’ Project; Banff Centre; World Stage Masterclass for Directors (Toronto); Nightwood’s Conference for Women Directors; and being one of 10 international directors invited to work with Peter Brook for a 2-week workshop at the National Theatre (London, England).
