Guelph Little Theatre presents GDGMJ
Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is Ann-Marie MacDonald’s dazzlingly witty, hugely inventive love-letter to Shakespeare, feminism, scholarship, dogged sleuthing and the triumph of the underdog. This Governor-General’s and Chalmers prize-winning comedy reveals what happens when “Othello” and “Romeo and Juliet” are rescued from tragedy. Of course MacDonald’s razor sharp mind is in every twist and turn in the layered story, and in every double and triple entendre. The story of the play is devilishly clever and you can tell she must have had a blast writing it. Prior knowledge of Shakespeare is not necessary: this is a gender-bendy, big-hearted and crazily-intelligent romp, where irony and anger sing in harmony with innocence and poignancy. This production goes like the wind, winks at the audience and tweaks its cheeks, and sends them out into the night, smiling.
