In Spirit is a theatre piece as part of the Words Yet to Come program that brings to light the subject matter of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls a social/political movement affecting a generation of Indigenous women and girls.
May, 1978. Molly is 13 days shy of her 13th birthday. Her dad can’t keep the secret of her gift any longer, so proudly presents Molly with a new bike - well... new to her. Sharing in his excitement, Molly rides the bike to show her friend who lives only a few houses up the road. Failing to return for dinner, a makeshift search party finds only her bike, tossed into some bushes at the side of a secondary highway. For years, her family and friends imagine Molly into adulthood. Her remains are finally found several decades later. This play takes place the day the family and community gather to release Molly’s spirit. Molly herself struggles to tell the story of her passing, recounting her darkest moments as well as those of a bright, happy childhood. Molly’s voice is articulate and insistent. Through her story she tells us that even in death, our missing and murdered women and girls will not be silenced.
