Welcome to Equity in Theatre

The CASA Award - Toronto Fundraising Event

While playwrights everywhere struggle and juggle their chosen careers, women playwrights in countries such as India, Afghanistan, and South Africa have obstacles much bigger than ours in Canada.  In many countries, theatre is a vital tool to advocate for change, and it is important that women’s voices are heard. Our project’s mission is to support and forge meaningful connections with South African women playwrights and, eventually, with other international theatre artists where there is limited financial or dramaturgical support.

We are creating this award in collaboration and consultation with the African Women Playwrights Network, based in South Africa. We are also consulting with some terrific African artists we met in Cape Town to be sure we create something that is useful and needed.

Our goal is to raise $7000 which will go towards supporting and mentoring a mid-career South African woman playwright who will benefit from financial and dramaturgical aid, and allow her time to write. This is where you come in.

Please consider making a donation. No matter how big or small, it will help us meet our goal. We have a charitable donation page on Canada Helps and donations are tax deductible. Here is the Link.

If you are on Facebook, please like our Facebook Page, where we will have occasional updates on our progress and info about our award and the artists involved.
